Blakelock was a romanticist American painter from the mid-1800’s. His focus in his works were landscapes that he elevated to a new level, bringing originality to his art. His paintings were usually darker, darker scenery, which was a result from sometimes mixing coal tar in with the paint. I think that’s why I loved his piece “Ghost Dance” so much, because it was darker and the addition of very faded, misty figures was intriguing and gave the illusion of mystery.  Some of his other works were very similar, such as with his piece, “Moonlight” (below). That piece is probably my favorite that I have seen of his. It has an eerie feel to it, but the shadows and silhouettes of the trees are beautiful. "Moonlight"
